My wife has always admired the 'Rangy' and long harboured a desire to own one or, more specifically, to drive one daily.
We have only had the Range Rover Sport SE for two months and it is a joy – such a luxurious car, and quite a looker.
You feel quite cosseted when travelling in it. It is smooth and comfortable to the max. It's not for nipping in and out of the traffic. It just isn't nimble, which is not a criticism, just a fact.
Luxurious comfort and race car handling are mutually exclusive. I've had my share of finely tuned driver's cars with taut suspension that corners like it's on rails, but they are not comfortable. Suspension that results in the car crashing through our poor suburban roads riddled with patches and manhole covers. But the Rangy seems to glide over those.
The performance is good for a big car. We have the new straight-six, 3.0-litre diesel 221kW engine and it is perfectly adequate – punchy in fact. I'm looking forward to taking it out on the highway for a decent holiday when restrictions are lifted, and to experience it over a 10- or 12-day driving trip.
If I'm honest, there is a little anxiety over purchasing a big ostentatious ICE car in this climate-changing world. But I am buoyed by the fact that with the AdBlue feature, it is the cleanest emissions technology in the world.
I expect this to be our last ICE car, and that EVs will be mainstream in five years when it's time to flip it. It's very early days, but so far we love it.
