Updated Mercedes-Benz G-Class spotted testing at the Nurburgring
Mercedes-Benz has attempted to disguise an updated version of its brick-on-wheels, the G-Class, while it undergoes testing in Germany.
The Mercedes-Benz G-Class is set to receive a facelift in 2024, as part of a mid-life update for the iconic German off-roader.
Spy video published by CarSpyMedia on YouTube shows a lightly camouflaged G-Class doing laps of the Nurburgring in Germany.
This news comes after the recent decision by Mercedes-Benz to re-open order books after a two year pause. Order holders still face the prospect of long wait times, despite prices of the G63 AMG rising by more than $60,000 in Australia.
While a new look is expected, it will be more of a light refresh for the boxy four-wheel drive. It sticks with an appearance that is very similar to what first appeared in 1979 with the first generation W460 G-Class.
Intrinsic design elements, like the round headlights, top-mounted indicator lamps and squared-off shape are intact, but the 2024 G-Class appears to get a revised fascia with some changes around the grille and lower air intakes.
The doors – which are not covered in camouflage – don’t appear to have been changed with this mid-life facelift.
And while there is some camouflage added to the rear of the G-Class, room for updating the appearance seems to be minimal.

There might be some bigger changes coming to the inside of the 2024 G-Class, with updates to the technology and cabin design likely.
Updates to the powertrain are so far unclear, but the Australian market could get an updated 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged petrol V8, which includes a 48V mild-hybrid boost for a peak power output of 450kW.
Although, the vehicle testing at the Nurburgring does appear to be missing the soundtrack of Mercedes’ own 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8.
Other markets around the world for the G-Class get a variety of alternative petrol and diesel engine options, but Australia only gets the choice of a top-specification G63 AMG.
