2006 Volvo S40 T5 AWD – Quick drive review
With the T5 AWD version of its compact sedan Volvo deservedly draws the attention of sporting drivers for the first time in a long time. The reason for this is the chassis, which allows the car to steer and handle with confidence. Maybe it's not up there with the German elite, but it's pretty good.
An on-demand all-wheel-drive system can shift drive from 95 per cent front to 95 per cent rear depending on traction conditions.
The T5's unique five-cylinder, turbocharged petrol engine produces 162 kW and 320 Nm with strength and flexibility. It mates, via a no-cost option, to either a six-speed manual or five-speed auto.
On PULP, it is claimed to use 9.7 L/100 km (10.2 auto), with a 3-star emissions rating. Our experience suggests this figure is hard to hit.
The T5 AWD is good value, though. It was introduced early in 2006 with a substantial price and equipment advantage over the old front-wheel-drive T5. Standard safety equipment includes front, side and curtain airbags, ABS with EBD and BAS, stability control and bi-xenon headlights.
Inside you'll find leather trim, climate control, six-CD audio, cruise control, heated front seats and the hallmark floating centre console.
