2006 Honda Jazz GLi – Quick drive review
No brand will benefit more from the Australia-Thai free trade agreement than Honda. Just consider what it will do for the Jazz.
When the funky little five-door was built in Japan, the base model GLi cost $17,390 (with air-conditioning and remote central locking). Now that it's built in Thailand you can find the Jazz GLi in your local showroom (with air, central locking, dual airbags, ABS with EBD, power windows, single CD audio and a full-size spare as standard) for $15,990.
Thoughtful design is Jazz's high point. The fuel tank under the front seats leaves a flatter, larger space for rear-seat passengers and cargo; the seating also folds flat easily.
A base model Jazz comes with a 1.3-litre, four-cylinder engine that produces 61 kW and 119 Nm. A five-speed manual is standard but a continuously variable transmission (CVT) is a $2000 option.
The engine does not include Honda's VTEC variable timing but it is an honest and enthusiastic worker, officially delivering an outstanding 5.7 L/100 km (manual) with a 3.5-star (out of five) emissions rating from the Green Vehicle Guide.
