Reports emerge of James May’s hospitalisation following 120km/h crash
Journalist and television presenter James May was hospitalised following a crash in a tunnel at high speeds, with information of his hospitalisation only now being reported overseas.
British media outlets are reporting former Top Gear presenter and star of Amazon’s The Grand Tour, James May, was hospitalised following a crash in a tunnel at 120km/h.
While it’s understood the incident took place during filming, a post from Reddit suggests it occurred back in March 2022.
However, UK newspaper The Sun has overnight revealed May had to be treated in hospital at the time.
It’s believed May was drag racing a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VIII in a tunnel at the decommissioned Olavsvern naval base in Norway, with co-hosts Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond driving an Audi RS4 and a Subaru Impreza WRX.
Reports suggest the three were racing towards a rock wall in the dark tunnel, with the lights only being turned on at the last moment.
‘Captain Slow’, as May is jokingly referred to by his co-hosts, is understood to have lost control of the turbocharged, all-wheel-drive Mitsubishi, hitting the wall at around 120km/h and leaving him bloodied after striking his head.
Paramedics took May to hospital for X-rays and a brain scan, but he walked away from the accident with one broken rib, The Sun reports.
Posts on his personal Instagram account show May filming for another show for Amazon, Our Man in Italy, in the months since, while also spending time releasing his own brand of gin.
The event will likely be covered in the irreverent style of the trio when season five of The Grand Tour is released in the coming months.
