Porsche is building an even bigger SUV – report

Rusted on fans might see the move as sacrilege, however the once-sports car centric marque is looking to broaden it's appeal with a three-row eight seater.

German car maker Porsche – which became famous in the 20th century for its lightweight rear-engined sports cars – is in the process of developing a new three-row SUV even bigger than its existing Cayenne flagship (shown above), according to a new report from Automotive News.

The story – which cites unnamed Porsche US dealer sources – suggests the vehicle is currently in the concept stage, however could be destined for showroom deliveries sometime after 2025.

Powertrain details are yet to be confirmed. However, a plug-in hybrid engine is speculated to be offered at launch, with fully-electric options slated to follow.

No previous Porsche model has seated more than five occupants, however the new design could have as many as eight seats owing to its "wide, flat" rear and three-row layout.

"It's very un-Porsche-like," a source familiar with the vehicle told the US outlet. "It has a flat rear design; it's not anything like the Macan (shown in gallery above) and Cayenne."

The report speculates the new model could be related under the skin to an upcoming flagship Volkswagen Group electric vehicle – codenamed 'Landjet' – which is under development for Audi, Bentley and Porsche.

Drive has reached out to a spokesperson for Porsche in Australia. This story will be updated if more information becomes available.
