Order books closing on Holden-built Chevrolet SS
US-market Commodore to be discontinued by the end of February
The Chevrolet SS sports sedan - basically the rebadged US-market version of our Holden Commodore - is taking its final orders this month.
According to online blog, GM Authority, February is the final month for US customers to place an order for the Aussie-built sports sedan, leaving little more than a week to secure the Chevrolet-badged Commodore.
Powered by the same 6.2-litre 'LS3' V8 that does service in performance versions of the local Holden Commodore, the Chevrolet SS pumps out a healthy 310kW of power and 563Nm of torque.
Drive is sent to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission - the latter getting steering-mounted paddle shifters.
At the Detroit motor show earlier this year, Alan Batey, executive vice president of General Motors (GM), said the Chevrolet SS would likely die with the locally-built Commodore once Australian factories closed their doors - and this latest report seems to confirm this.
Unlike the special-edition versions of the Holden Commodore that will send off Australia's car, the Chevrolet SS gets no changes or special send-offs in its final weeks - though 'Orange Blast Metallic' replaces 'Like It Hot Red Metallic' for the 2017 model-year.
The demise of the US-market SS also marks the final time a Holden export will be offered in the States, following the Pontiac GTO (Holden Monaro) and Pontiac G8 (Holden Commodore) that were offered last decade.
