Nissan’s next-generation GT-R could come with a 2018 launch date and a hybrid powertrain, according to a new report out of the US.
American website Inside Line reports that while a 2015 debut was planned, the new model has been delayed due to GT-R boss Kazutoshi Mizuno’s health concerns.
The report adds that the GT-R will join a growing number of sports cars to utilise electric-hybrid technology to deliver more power and greater efficiency.
Exactly how Nissan will introduce a hybrid system into the GT-R is unclear, although Mizuno is believed to be less than impressed with Porsche's application of electric power in the upcoming 918 supercar.
The report adds that the GT-R team is watching the development of Honda's new NSX, which utilises electric motors to deliver all-wheel-drive handling.
The use of a hybrid drivetrain in the GT-R would also significantly improve the current model’s hefty 11.7l/100 combined fuel figure.
In the meantime, a significant refresh of the current model is expected in 2013, with new front and rear styling expected to accompany further mechanical upgrades.
The current GT-R has been continually refined since its 2007 debut, but this refresh will help the model compete with Porsche’s new 991 911 range.
