More new features for upcoming Mustang

Ford has released further details of its new Mustang that’s due later this year. 

The facelifted sixth-generation pony-car that brings a redesigned grille, bumper, bonnet, LED headlamps and revised rear-end launches locally in August and both GT and EcoBoost models bring exclusive new additions along with an updated California Special.

Automatic rev-matching now features on Mustang GTs that are equipped with the upgraded Getrag six-speed manual and powered by a gruntier 5.0-litre V8 petrol producing 339kW and 556Nm.

The four-cylinder turbocharged petrol EcoBoost model misses out on rev-matching but can be optioned with a new fully variable active valve performance exhaust that Ford says will add an ‘aggressive snarl’ though quad-tip exhaust outlets while ‘good neighbour’ mode keeps the peace on early morning starts. It also gets the same new 10-speed automatic as the GT that replaces the six-speed unit and all models can be optioned with a 1000-watt 12-speaker B&O Play sound system.

The vintage-inspired California Special harks back to earlier models and brings sides stripes with fake rear fender scoops, custom black grille with off-centre retro mustang badge, Performance Pack 1 front splitter, red California Special badge on the boot and five-spoke alloy wheels. Inside are unique suede seats with California Special logos on the dash and floor mats.

Other new additions are vintage colour options Velocity Blue and Need for Green, along with the limited-edition Bullit’s Dark Highland Green which has been confirmed for Australia.

“These intense new colours trace back to Mustang’s classic colours of the late 1960s and early 1970s,” said Ford car group marketing manager Corey Holter.

“No doubt, 2019 is an exciting year for Mustang enthusiasts, especially fans of our California Special and Bullitt models.

“This year further targets hardcore Mustang enthusiasts who want even more performance from Bullit, while new technology including rev-matching on manual transmission equipped Mustang GTs and active valve performance exhaust on EcoBoost models means even more thrills.” 

Further tweaks underneath include new shocks and cross-axis joint rear suspension with optional MagneRide damping.

The entry-level EcoBoost fastback is priced from $49,990 (plus on-road costs) in Australia, going up to $62,990 for the manual-equipped GT Fastback, a price rise of $4000 and $5500 respectively.

Pricing for the limited-edition Bullit and options is yet to be confirmed.
