Tesla to supply largest battery storage facility in Australia

A coal-mining town in Western Australia will soon be home to the country's biggest battery farm, utilising technology from US electric car maker Tesla.

Australia's largest battery storage facility will soon begin construction using Tesla technology.

Located in the southwest of Western Australia, French company Neoen has been awarded a $650 million contract by the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) to establish a second electricity storage location, consisting of Tesla Megapacks.

The Neoen Collie Battery, as it will be known, will have the ability to store and discharge 20 per cent of the state's average electricity demand alone – accounting for an estimated four hours of supply during the evening peak.

When combined with the current batteries located in Collie – a traditional coal-mining town – it's set to provide up to 40 per cent of the power required by the region's grid.

The facility will overtake the Victorian Big Battery as the largest in Australia, and will be one of the biggest in the southern hemisphere.

Combined with the increasing uptake of rooftop solar, it's expected the new project will help reduce the state's reliance on coal-fired electricity.

The Neoen Collie Battery will be made up of 348 Tesla Megapack 2 XL units, with the ability to store 1363MWh of power.
